Bhutan has a unique, deeply spiritual, and a rich cultural heritage, which has remained remarkably unblemished. Religion and faith play a pivotal role in all aspects of lives of the Bhutanese people.

A great degree of the remaining of living culture is clearly apparent here in Bhutan, where age-old traditions are vibrant and still continue to have major significance in the lives of the Bhutanese people. The signs of strong traditions, from the impressive architecture and art forms adoring the Bhutanese landscape, are evident to any visitor visiting the country.

PEOPLE

The rugged, mountainous terrains of the country have allowed Bhutan’s numerous ethic groups, each with their own distinct cultural and linguistic characteristics, to thrive in historic isolation without being influenced by the outside world.

People in Bhutan could be broadly described as Ngalops, those coming from the western region of the country; Sharchops, residents from the east; and Lhotsampas or people coming from southern Bhutan. Bhutanese people are mainly known for their good nature, friendliness and hospitality. They are also humorous and fun-loving people.

LANGUAGE

Language is a powerful medium through which one’s culture is transmitted and hence an important contributor to the achievement of Information Society .The national language of Bhutan is Dzongkha; however English is widely spoken due to its use as the primary language of school instruction.

HEALTH

The national referral hospital in the capital (Thimphu) offers the best medical facilities. However, travelers are advised to avoid untreated/un-boiled water during their stay in Bhutan.

Altitude sickness can also be a problem for some travelers. And while general medicines are readily available, travelers are advised to bring any prescription medicines with them. Travelers are also advised to consult their doctors and arrange travel insurance prior to travelling into Bhutan.

Bhutan is plus six hour ahead of GMT, 30 minutes ahead from neighboring India, an hour behind Thailand, and two hours behind Singapore.
